Name Number Calculator: What Your Name Reveals About You

Your life path number shows the inner road. Your name number shows how you come across to others. Together they tell more than either one alone. While the life path number comes from your birth date and never changes, the name number carries the vibration of the letters you were given at birth.

What Is the Name Number?

The name number, also called the expression number or destiny number, describes how you show up in the world. Not who you are at your core, that's the life path number. But how others experience you, which qualities you project, and which role you naturally step into in groups.

The idea is ancient. In Hebrew Gematria, letters carried numerical values thousands of years ago. Greek Isopsephy followed the same principle. What all these traditions share: a person's name is not random. It carries a quality that can be expressed in numbers.

How to Calculate Your Name Number

The calculation uses your full birth name, the name on your birth certificate. Later name changes through marriage or other reasons don't count for the base calculation.

Each letter gets a number value:

A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=6, G=7, H=8, I=9,
J=1, K=2, L=3, M=4, N=5, O=6, P=7, Q=8, R=9,
S=1, T=2, U=3, V=4, W=5, X=6, Y=7, Z=8.

An example: John David Miller.

JOHN: 1+6+8+5 = 20, then 2+0 = 2.
DAVID: 4+1+4+9+4 = 22. Stop. Master number.
MILLER: 4+9+3+3+5+9 = 33. Stop. Master number.
Total: 2+22+33 = 57, then 5+7 = 12, then 1+2 = 3.
The name number is 3.

If the final result is 11, 22, or 33, it stays as a master number and isn't reduced further.

The Nine Name Numbers and Their Meaning

Name number 1: You come across as independent and decisive. Others see you as someone who leads. The flip side: people expect leadership from you, even when you don't have the answers.

Name number 2: You come across as connecting and diplomatic. People feel heard around you. The flip side: your own position can get lost in the mediator role.

Name number 3: You come across as communicative and lively. Your words carry weight, written or spoken. The flip side: lightness is sometimes mistaken for lack of depth.

Name number 4: You come across as reliable and structured. Others entrust you with things because they sense you'll finish them. The flip side: spontaneity isn't the first thing people associate with you.

Name number 5: You come across as adaptable and open. People sense a curiosity in you that's contagious. The flip side: consistency isn't the first quality others connect with you.

Name number 6: You come across as caring and responsible. Others turn to you when they need stability. The flip side: the expectation of always being available can become a burden.

Name number 7: You come across as thoughtful and deep. Others sense that something is working behind your silence. The flip side: distance that gets misread as disinterest.

Name number 8: You come across as competent and determined. Others see someone who delivers results. The flip side: warmth doesn't show first, even when it's there.

Name number 9: You come across as wise and open-hearted. Others sense a maturity in you that goes beyond age. The flip side: the big picture can make personal closeness harder.

When Name Number and Life Path Disagree

Often the two numbers complement each other. A life path 7 (searching for depth) with a name number 3 (vivid expression) describes someone who can communicate deep things in accessible ways.

Sometimes they pull in different directions. A life path 4 (structure) with a name number 5 (freedom) creates an inner tug between the need for order and the drive for change. That's not a flaw. It's the specific dynamic of that person.

Often the most interesting part lies exactly in that tension. It's not the single number that tells the story but the interplay.

The Name as Mirror

In numerology, your name isn't just a label. It's an expression of what you bring into the world. The life path number shows where the inner road leads. The name number shows which tools you were given for the journey.

Both are parts of a larger picture. Your life purpose, personal cycles, astrology, Human Design, and the I Ching add what numerology alone can't see.

Your personal NUMEN COMPASS brings together the I Ching, Western, Vedic and Taoist astrology, numerology and Human Design in a single report. 80+ pages, calculated from your moment of birth. Create your report now →
